My Wedding Sketch

So this semester I took a fashion illustration class, and I didn't do too bad considering that I didn't know how to draw.  I just thought I would show you guys what I've been up to these past few months.

My theme for this sketch is a modern vintage bride, which is a popular theme that has popped up in the bridal industry about five years ago, especially on Pinterest.  Modern vintage is taking elements from the past and pairing them with something new, and the design has to be something that every bride would want to wear because that is what makes it modern.  For example, I took a popular vintage silhouettes and added modern details like crystal beading.

This is just one of my designs.  It's a ballgown made with big silk rosettes, which make the dress bottom heavy and very dramatic.  This design is for the woman that wants to feel like a princess on her big day.  Her belt is made of pearls and crystal beading that match her necklace.  I also added a silk organza panel near her bust, so she is not too exposed.

My Favorites from the Golden Globes 2014

It's that time of year again!  Award season.  The most famous stars of Hollywood showcase their sense of fashion and the world's top designers.  Here are my nominees for best dressed at the Golden Globes.

Lupita Nyong'o

12 Years a Slave

This was her first appearance on the red carpet, and I think she looks gorgeous!  Most new stars don't get it right the first time, but she definitely did.  She is wearing Ralph Lauren.

Why does this work?

To start with, this dress was a big risk to wear on the red carpet because it has a cape.  It works because the cape is off her shoulders, which gives this dress a slight sex appeal.  The cape is also close to her body unlike a superhero cape, so it doesn't look like a costume.  The actual dress underneath is tailored to perfection.  Beautiful!

Taylor Swift

Taylor definitely went out of her comfort zone with this glamorous dress by Carolina Herrera.  If you look at her past pictures from award shows, she usually wears champagne with a little sparkle.  This time she choose a bold color in a very classic silhouette.

Why does this work?
Let's start from the top!  Since this dress has a timeless, classic silhouette, I love that she choose a 40s inspired hairstyle.  The modern twist she put on her hair was the side sweep bangs.  The sweetheart neckline is great for her small chest because it gives her the illusion of curves.  The high waist line on this dress makes Taylor look longer and leaner than she already is.

Olivia Wilde

Can you believe she is pregnant?!  When I first saw her on the red carpet, they were showing her from the neck up, and I already knew her dress was stunning.  Then they showed her baby bump, and I almost passed out.  I hope I can look this beautiful when I'm pregnant.

Why does it work?

Olivia's dress is tight, but not too tight.  The slight simmer allows the viewer's eye to travel to different areas of the dress, so you don't focus on her baby bump.  Her make-up and hair are flawless as usual.  I think you could wrap this girl in a trash bag with the perfect hair and make-up, and she would still look incredible.

Polka Dots

Polka Dots
My inspiration for this look was the beautiful Blake Lively.  Her Bardot look of the 1960s took me to one of my favorite time periods in fashion because it's classy and timeless.  I'm definitely going to try to create her bouffant hairstyle this holiday season.
